Bradwell simply executes; wins 55-0

Posted Monday, October 23, 2006 by Jimmy Currier, Sports Editor - Hinesville Coastal Courier

Bradwell wasted little time showing that they are still in the Region 3-AAAAA race.

Preston Frasier rushed 76 yards for a touchdown on the Tigers' first offensive play and the Tigers never looked back in the 55-0 win over Johnson High on Friday night at Olvey Field.

Frasier did not stop and tacked on two more touchdowns and 179 more yards to finish with 255 yards - a school record.

John Stewart held the previous Bradwell single-game rushing record with 238 yards against Tompkins.

"I knew I had to come out and step up in the first half," the senior said. "I did what Coach Walsh told me to do so everyone could get some camera time."

Bradwell coach Jim Walsh Jr. was impressed but not surprised at Frasier's performance.

"We've had a stretch of good backs here with Daniel Fleming and Jerrell Crawford and Preston stepped up," Walsh said. "He showed tonight the talented kid he is."

Frasier did not do it alone. The offensive line hit their blocking assignments and everyone stepped up in the win.

Junior Josh Magaw, who scored the Tigers' fourth touchdown on a 3-yard run, said the Tigers needed the win.

"No doubt, we needed it," he said. "We can't let it get to our heads. We have some tough games left."

"We got up quick and the kids stayed focused," Walsh said. "This was one of the best nights we've had executing. If you execute then good things happen."

Offensive coordinator Blake Duncan said simple works.

"You can't get away from the basics," he said. "When you keep it simple, you build confidence and execute then you get a game like we had tonight."

The Tigers weren't shabby on the other side of the ball, either.

The Tiger defense allowed less than 200 yards, blocked a punt and recovered a fumble in the win.

"We just ran basic stuff," Bradwell defensive coordinator Jeff Miller said. "We ran inside, the outside provided pressure and we were able to hold them."

The shutout, Bradwell's first since a 47-0 win over Johnson in 2004, did not come easy.

In the second quarter, it appeared the Atomsmashers would get on the scoreboard after Smith completed a 29-yard pass and a 38-yard pass to move the ball to the Bradwell 2-yard line.

The Tiger defense showed its worth and stuffed Smith on four straight sneaks to uphold the shutout.

"We've given up a lot of points this year and it feels good to get a goose egg," Miller said. "We executed."

Midway through the third quarter, Keddrick Brown and Frasier blocked the Atomsmashers' punt and Reuben Boone pounced on the ball in the end zone to put the Tigers ahead 48-0.

The Tigers went ahead 55-0 in the fourth quarter after junior Kinture Kyle scored his second touchdown of the evening. On the Tigers' first play from the line of scrimmage, he broke loose for 66 yards.

Kyle scored his first touchdown in the third quarter on a 2-yard run.

Johnson fumbled on its last drive and Bradwell junior Deron Jordan was there to pick up the ball and seal the win.

Frasier rushed for his third touchdown on the Tigers' first play in the second half when he broke free for 55 yards.

Ahead 34-0, Walsh and the coaches were afforded the opportunity to play the back-ups.

"They've worked their tails off during the season and we gave them the second half tonight." Walsh said. "A lot of them have been asked to step up and fill in for us on a few plays but have never had consistent reps."

Frasier scored his second touchdown on the Tigers' second drive of the game on an 82-yard run.

Sophomore DeMario Day gave the Tigers their third touchdown on a 1-yard dive
